Happy Earth Day!
In honor and celebration of our beautiful earth, I’ve put together a small but crazy effective list of eco-friendly/cruelty-free beauty products that you can include into your daily routine that will make a big difference in the world.
The way I started my eco-friendly journey was by slowly transitioning into products that I researched and knew were more beneficial to the environment. The beauty industry is HUGE so there are a lot of choices out there and it can be a bit overwhelming when you're just starting. It’s just a matter of going through them and finding the best alternatives. Luckily you have people like me who have tried it all and I can tell you with 100% confidence what I use and what I love. So here’s my list of products I adore and you can use guilt-free!
1. Biodegradable glitter or shimmer
When I found out glitter was horrible for the environment it really stung. Because for one I LOVE GLITTER. I’m such a girly girl when it comes to glitter to me it goes with anything and everything. BUT, what I don’t love is that glitter is actually teeny tiny pieces of plastic called micro plastics that pollute streams and oceans and substantially harm wildlife. Scientists actually want us to start banning glitter because of its detrimental effects on our ecosystem! So if you’re bummed out about this (like I was) don’t worry there’s a viable solution! Instead, use shimmer and/or biodegradable glitter. Biodegradable glitter is amazing because it’s softer than traditional plastic glitter and made from plant-based materials.
Biodegradation is the disintegration of materials by bacteria, fungi, or other biological means. This means that it doesn’t sit in a landfill for years and years and years like plastic does!
Also, hard traditional plastic glitter can actually scratch your eyes and irritate your skin so it’s best to stay away from it anyway.
2. Eco-friendly brushes
So my favorite brushes in the world are made from Eco Tools. I’ve tried many other brands and I still keep coming back to this one. There’s a lot of hype in the makeup world about Morphe and Sigma but don’t think that’s the only brand you need to blend well. Every makeup look on my site and Insta (@nerdiacatmakeup) was done with Eco Tools, Real Techniques, and even Wet N Wild brushes. The best part is that the handles are made of bamboo and not plastic. Also Eco Tools blending sponges are made from recycled materials.
3. Makeup remover (not wipes!)
So this one was a little hard to part with as well. But when you look at the overwhelming stats of how disposable wipes are polluting our oceans it should become easy to give up. The thing about disposable makeup wipes is that they do not disappear once they’ve been thrown away. They stay around and just cause more damage and trash. In fact, they can take up to 100 years to decompose in a landfill! Also, research shows that makeup wipes don’t even cleanse your skin. All they do is smear bacteria around your face and create more problems for your skin in the future. What I use and definitely recommend is a good cruelty-free face wash or this Gem Water Crystal Infused Micellar Cleansing Tonic by Pacifica Beauty. It smells of heavenly watermelon, quartz, and lemongrass. Use with a soft towel and your skin will feel amazing!
*Disclaimer: If you are a working makeup artist makeup wipes should be used for sanitary purposes to prevent contamination!
4. Plant-based makeup brands
One cruelty-free makeup brand that changed the way I view makeup ingredients is 100% Pure Cosmetics. It’s an innovative makeup brand that is beautiful, natural, and trendy. They use fruit, vegetable, tea, and other plant pigments as their ingredients so it’s completely natural and healthy. Their packaging is made from recycled paper AND they are recognized by the city of San Jose as having the lowest amount of landfill garbage and majority recycled! Their products smell incredible as well. I promise you you’ll fall in love with them as much as I did.
This makeup look was done with only 100% Pure Cosmetics.
So there you have my top eco-friendly beauty hacks that you can do right now that will directly impact our environment immensely! I hope that you try at least one of the products shown above. Also, let me know in the comments your favorite eco-friendly beauty products!
