a marketing scam?
The beauty industry is a billion dollar industry that keeps growing and growing. So for most companies, it totally makes sense to jump on any bandwagon trend that will increase sales. And right now one of the biggest trends is natural, healthy, & cruelty-free makeup.
According to Fast Company, "a growing number of consumers are rejecting chemical-filled cosmetics for pricey, plant-based alternatives. It’s a thriving sector—one that some experts think could change the beauty industry for good." The green trend is ever-growing and stronger than ever.
Why is this? Because of the wonderful and infinite knowledge on the internet we are now very aware of everything that goes around us. What we eat, say, do, or put on our face is information we can find out with a touch of button. That’s liberating but at the same time a little scary.
We now know that makeup used to include so many frightening ingredients that were extremely harmful to our health. I don't know about you but I believe beauty should never come at the price of health. Our skin is our largest organ and and many ingredients included in products we use daily such as makeup, deodorant, lotion, shampoo, etc. is quickly absorbed by our skin. We now know that certain ingredients in unhealthy makeup brands can cause a range of health concerns from fertility problems to cancer.
So is it all hype?
I firmly believe that healthy makeup is that way to go because most of the time it contains vitamins that help our body.
Which is something we definitely need now and forever. So why not look beautiful from the inside and out?
also, healthy makeup brands tend to be cruelty-free which is the end goal of it all right? It’s a win-win! you are not harming innocent animals or yourself!
what to do:
Now that you know this information, what do you do with it? Well you would think just picking any makeup brand with a natural label on it solves the problem but that's not always the case. Because the FDA does not regulate ingredients in cosmetics any makeup brand can claim they are natural, healthy, cruelty-free, and eco-friendly. Yes, that unfortunately means some brands lie just to make money. The good news is there are a lot of brands that are certified and have proven to be what they claim to be. You can check out my top list of natural, healthy makeup brands that kickass right here.
But healthy makeup is expensive af!
Trust me I know, it pays to be healthy. Natural & healthy makeup is pricey because the ingredients are natural and typically made from natural botanical oils. Organic farms do not rely on growth hormones so they charge more for smaller batches. Also, healthy makeup has a shorter shelf life since it's natural. For example, think of healthy makeup as an avocado salad that's only good for a couple of days versus unhealthy makeup that's more like junk food that lasts years. Food and cosmetics should not last that long! That usually means they're loaded with harmful chemicals.
So what I do is go by the 80/20 rule. I buy 80% healthy makeup. And 20% regular makeup (that’s still cruelty-free of course!)
